What is a natural swimming pool?
All pools require filtration to stay clean, but there is a key difference between natural and traditional pools. A natural swimming pool uses biological filtration instead of chlorine or saltwater treatment systems.
Biological filtration occurs when water is pumped through aquatic plants and other biological media in the regeneration zone, which filters back into the pool.
Here’s a quick comparison of traditional and chemical-free pools in Oklahoma.
| Traditional Pool | Natural Pool | |
|---|---|---|
| Filtration | Chlorine or Salt | Biological (Plants and Media) |
| Main Maintenance Need | Chemical Balancing | Living Material Management and Gardening |
| Water Color | Clear or Blueish | Clear, Tinged Blue-Green |
| Cost | Lower Upfront, Higher Operating | Higher Upfront, Lower Operating |
| Energy Usage | Higher Energy Pump Required | Lower Energy Circulation |
How Regeneration Zone Pools Work
Circulating and filtering the pool’s water through biological media and aquatic plants in the regeneration zone cleans the water. But how?
Plant roots filter debris, and beneficial microorganisms (such as bacteria) eat pollutants that could cause algae growth before the water is gently recirculated back into the swimming pool.
The result? Perfectly clean water with no chemical smell, eye sting, or chemical balancing.

Natural vs traditional pool: what’s the right fit?
As you’re considering a pool build, which best describes you?
Traditional Pool Owner
- Wants Predictable Maintenance
- Loves the Look of Traditional Clear “Blue” Pools
- Thinks About Lower Initial Investment
Natural Pool Owner
- Wants Fewer Chemicals
- Loves Gardening and Landscaping Projects
- Thinks About Long-Term Maintenance Costs
The choice between natural and traditional pools boils down to your lifestyle and personal preferences – there’s no right or wrong answer.
Case Study: See the $500,000 Natural Pool in Oklahoma City Built by Donnie Price
A decade ago, Donnie had the honor of building a $500,000 biological filtration pool in the OKC metro area. Here are the highlights of the project:

Mechanically Sound
The 60,000-gallon swimming pool is only naturally filtered and yet runs on less energy than a 100-watt light bulb. Over the years, the pool’s operational cost still is a fraction of a chlorinated pool of a similar size.
Breathtaking Design
This project has a fully sculpted integrated grotto with waterfall and hand finished concrete surfaces. The regeneration zone is intended to be a visible water garden and aquatic habitat.
Global Interest
The pool has received wide-spread international attention. Even ten years later, people still call us from Europe to ask how we did it. Whether executing a small pool or a project as substantial as this one, it’s proof: if you can dream it (and the engineering supports it), we can build it.
A natural swimming pool is just the beginning.
When owner-designer Donnie delivers a natural pool build, a custom grotto, water feature, or sculptural element often follows. These hand-sculpted elements enhance the natural aesthetic of the pool and are always designed from scratch for your pool – and no one else’s.

Don’t take our word for it.
We haven’t had a single negative review in 25 years, and there’s good reason for that. Explore what people have to say about us to see if we’re a good fit for your project.

Cost of a Natural Swimming Pool in Oklahoma
Because every natural swimming pool is different, it’s nearly impossible to give a ballpark price for your natural pool project. As previously mentioned, due to the complexity of the regeneration zone and circulation engineering, the upfront cost for a natural swimming pool is higher.
Variables that Affect Pool Price
- Pool Size
- Natural vs Chlorine
- Site & Sun Exposure
- Pool Shape & Geometric Complexity
- Water Features, Grottos, Ledges and Sculpted Concrete
- Materials & Finishes

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a natural swimming pool?
A natural swimming pool is a fully usable swimming pool that uses biological filtration instead of chlorine or saltwater. Water is filtered through a regeneration zone – plants, gravel media, and gentle circulation – keeping it clean, swim-able, and free of chemical smell or eye irritation. Natural pools have been popular in Europe for decades.
How does a natural pool stay clean without chlorine?
A regeneration zone – typically located above, beside, or integrated with the swimming zone – filters water through aquatic plants and biological media. Plants absorb nutrients that would otherwise feed algae. Low-energy circulation moves water through the system. The result: clean, clear water with no chlorine, no chemical smell, and no eye irritation.
How much does a natural swimming pool cost in Oklahoma?
Natural pools cost more upfront than chlorinated pools – the regeneration zone, biological filtration, and design complexity all add cost. Operating cost reverses the equation: no chemicals, dramatically lower energy use, no heater required for most builds. Most homeowners break even on lifetime cost within 5-10 years. The free consultation produces project-specific pricing.
Are natural pools safe for kids and pets?
Yes, and many families choose natural pools specifically for that reason. Biologically filtered water is gentle on skin and eyes – no chlorine smell, no chemical irritation, no concern about a child or pet drinking the water. The regeneration zone is shallow and edge-protected by design. ADC builds with families in mind.
Do natural pools work in Oklahoma’s climate?
Yes. ADC has been building natural pools in OKC for over a decade. Heat, freeze-thaw, and hard water are all manageable with proper plant selection, regeneration zone sizing, and circulation engineering. Most natural pools in OK are used April through October as the primary swimming season; some homeowners heat their pools and extend it.
How do you maintain a natural pool?
Natural pool maintenance is a different rhythm than chlorinated pool maintenance – not necessarily less work. Regular tasks include plant management in the regeneration zone, biological media checks, and seasonal cleanouts. Most natural pool owners find the rhythm more enjoyable than weekly chemical balancing. ADC walks you through the maintenance schedule at handoff.
Will my natural pool look like a natural swimming pond?
No. The swimming zone of a natural pool looks and feels like a high-end traditional pool — clear water, defined edges, and depth contours designed for swimming. The regeneration zone can be visually integrated as a water-garden feature, set apart as a pond-like element, or screened behind landscaping. Your call.
Can I convert my existing chlorinated pool to a natural pool?
Sometimes. Conversion depends on the existing pool’s structure, the available space for a regeneration zone, and the pool’s plumbing and equipment compatibility. Some traditional pools convert cleanly; others are better off with a new build. Best assessed on site – bring your existing pool’s specs to the free consultation.
How long does natural pool construction take?
Most natural pools take 6-14 weeks from break-ground to final walkthrough – slightly longer than chlorinated pools because of regeneration zone construction and biological system setup. ADC confirms the timeline at the consultation and updates it weekly during the build. Larger pools with integrated grottos run toward the longer end.
